Practice your archery and spellcasting ahead of renaissance faire

Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 7-8 and Nov. 14-15, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. 375 Saw Mill Branch Road, Townsend, DE 19734. Tickets: $25 adults (16+), $10 youth (5-15), free for children under 5.

Ah, the renaissance faire — the only societally acceptable place to dress up as an elf, spend your life savings on a sword and devour a turkey leg for each meal of the day.

The Delaware Renaissance Faire offers such festivities as a mermaid musical comedy show, armored combat with axes and swords, blacksmith demonstrations and even… human-powered snow cones? Seriously, you can run on a hamster wheel to generate the energy to make a snow cone.

The renaissance faire continues this and next weekend, if you’re brave enough to accept your quest.

Robot Invasion

Flying saucers touch ground in Wilmington

Saturday, Nov. 7, 4-7 p.m. Rockwood Park & Museum. 4651 Washington St. Extension, Wilmington, DE 19809. Free.

Robots are invading Wilmington, and they’re starting with Rockwood Park.

Legendary local artist and owner-operator of Spaceboy Clothing David Chez invites you to marvel at his latest fiberglass sculptures: a pink UFO ready to abduct cows and humans alike, and the remains of a giant, green robot, half-buried underground.

These otherworldly visitors will be making a three-hour pit stop, so grab your cameras and don’t miss this free art exhibition. The event will also feature concessions, tours, craft activities and a floating lantern launch.

Delaware Art Museum hosts Indigenous fashion show and art exhibition

Friday, Nov. 6, 6-9 p.m. Delaware Art Museum. 2301 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington, DE, 19806. Tickets: $50.

In honor of Native American Heritage Month, the Delaware Art Museum is hosting a fashion show co-headlined by Indigenous designers Kehala Smith and Dayesla Ixtli.

Ixtli, a Newark local, uses body paint, makeup and headdresses to transform her models into goddesses and warriors. Smith is a fifth-generation beadworker from the Tuscarora Nation who creates fashion that celebrates Haudenosaunee culture and “empowers people of every shape, size and background.”

The event will also feature dance and drum performances, as well as remarks by Chief Urie Ridgeway of the Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape Tribal Nation.

For those who can’t make the fashion show, an Indigenous art exhibition is also on display through Nov. 29.

Antique Jewelry and Lobster Beanies

Get holiday shopping done early at Rehoboth Art League

Saturday-Sunday, Nov. 7-8, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Rehoboth Art League. 12 Dodds Lane, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Tickets: $5 (or $20 for a group of 5), free for children under 12.

It’s November, which means that, for those of you who celebrate the holidays, it’s already time to start gift shopping. Instead of doomscrolling on Amazon the day before, get your shopping done early — and locally — at Rehoboth Art League.

About 30 artists will be selling work at the league’s annual Holiday Fair. There are, of course, many winter-themed items, like Patti Kelly’s handknit stockings and Christen Parzych’s beanies with lobsters on them. But many items, like stuffed animals, shawls and hand carved bowls, would work as gifts for any time of year.

For a truly one-of-a-kind gift, check out Dolhathai Srijamcharoen’s jewelry, which she makes from antique items like porcelain doll faces, broken china and mercury dimes.

Dover parties like it’s 1776

Saturday, Nov. 7, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. 9 The Green, Dover, DE 19901. Free.

If you’re a little overly enthusiastic about the musicals “1776” and “Hamilton,” boy, do I have the event for you. The Delaware Heritage Festival is a celebration of all things 18th century America, featuring a Benjamin Franklin impersonator, a fiddle and dulcimer performance, tavern singing and even a dancing George Washington puppet.

And if you have a periwig in your closet for some reason, dust it off for the Founding Fathers costume contest — a unique way to celebrate the semiquincentennial, to say the least.
